Orphaned at 11 years old, in poverty, I have spent most of my 63 years hustling to get ahead, to survive. I have always worked a lot, constantly under financial pressure. The problem is that this lifestyle, getting by, spending whatever you can get, dodging bullets all the while, becomes a habit.
After many years of living this way, through one business cycle, one career change, one mishap after another, it takes real effort to change this pattern; indeed, for me, it took early retirement for fourteen months, to get a handle on it, and change.
But now that I am happily back to work, after a long rest and a great deal of introspection, I am doing things much differently: I am working, building, earning, relating with the people whom I serve, and work with, with a completely different mindset, because I WANT TO, and not because I must.
The difference is dramatic, and much more pleasurable.
Making the transition is easier said than done without resources, but I believe, as many successful people do, that it is more your mindset, rather than your poverty, that holds you back from having the right attitude.
To survive poverty, and overcome it, you must be able to remove the obstacles from your mind, and focus on solutions, and I believe that this can be done earlier, before the poverty mindset becomes a self limiting habit. People who are not poor, cannot understand why this is such a challenge for some, but I do.
My point here is simply that it is a challenge that can be overcome, if you are healthy, determined, and you live long enough. This fact has been proven over and over again throughout the ages by many who had it worse than myself, and accomplished more.
I honestly believe that regardless of circumstance, a strong and positive work ethic almost always leads to stunning success; that whatever your resources, it is more important why you do what you must do anyway, than what it is.
You see, people who resign themselves to survive, and succeed, rather than resisting the inevitable, are truly happy, and often, along the way, they learn to love what they have chosen to do, not only because they must, but because they can.
I have found that the humblest, poorest, least talented people, who “whistle while they work” are the happiest of all.

Embrace what you must do, and you just may find that you like it.

As I go through the “Jonesing”, quitting cigarettes for the second time because I got overconfident after 21 years and thought I could cheat a little (ooops) it occurs to me just what an addict will do for tobacco; it doesn’t even have a positive effect, hmm, just creates anxiety, then relieves it.
The things I have seen a man do, for relief, for a drink, a cigarette,a gambling rush, a chance to get laid, or look good, or be recognized or appreciated…we are really stupid, ALL OF US!
What a man or woman will do to themselves to look a certain way, to their health to avoid giving up bad food, an addiction, or a fetish; how unhealthy people have become, what they spend their money on because they do not have enough self discipline to workout…the drugs they will take, the lies that they will buy, the known risks, and WE do it anyway..wow.
What is wrong with us? Why do we do these things? You are not going to like the answer.
We are flawed. An animal that can eat, reproduce, sleep, dies a happy animal. A human who can do only that, will destroy his or herself. We are made for more, desire more, seek more, will only settle for more.
We are made to create, disrupt, be at cause, to rule this world, actually. But we must be very careful. A human who is enlightened can have God-given power to affect the world around us; but an out of control “God” is equally destructive, on accident, unknowingly.
That is why there are rules, a plan, a way to remove the proverbial “wheat” fro the “Chaff” amongst humans.
We desire, crave, must have meaning, enlightenment, understanding. These are the intangibles that we seek to our own detriment, if necessary, and value above all else.
If you think that you are anything less than a developing God-child, you defeat yourself.
Don’t add to the noise that we all must learn to ignore, listen to the beautiful music beneath the noise.

I was going crazy one day at a time, early retired and barely paying my rent, so I gave notice, and started looking for owner contract land. I moved my stuff to a Concho AZ mini-storage, and camped for free for one week, which was all it took to find my land. I am going to share something with you that a lot of people, even in my family, do not know. They all know that I do not sleep much, 4-5 hours at a time maximum. What they do not know is why; I have terrible dreams. This is because I have had a damaging, very hard past, but read on, for that is not the point.
You see, just like you, I am human. I have spent my whole life studying human character. What I have discovered is that it is not the good times that you remember, that define you, it is the hard ones.
The perspective that these very difficult experiences brand into your memory, define you, your will, your strength, and yes, even your joy.
I will spare you details of my very hard past, since even for me, it has been a challenge to have those memories not cripple me for life. But that, again, is not the point, because now I am strong, enlightened, and I cry tears of joy literally every singe day.
The unpopular truth is that without hard times, there are no good times. They come together you know. Without intense pain to create the perspective, there is no intense pleasure and pride. Life is a bundle of the good and the bad. Without down, you do not know which way is up, you might say.
No matter what you do, you get both, and the fact is that YOU actually define your happiness and sadness, nobody else, only you. Some are happy with very little, others are never satisfied with great riches.
But there is a problem with this scenario, a challenge which you must overcome to be a successful human.
You see, you have a mind, body, and soul. Everything that affects one, affects the others, and very importantly, everyone else.
Your subconscious mind is simply a computer, it records everything that you experience, good and bad, to draw upon later. It records patterns, lessons, emotions, actions, and results; like a hard drive.
Your conscious mind uses this information to make decisions, and along with your emotions, which are also affected by this stored information.
When you are well, well fed, rested, and confident, you have tremendous power to do more than you ever imagined, and every time that manifests, you become even more powerful.
It is easy for a wealthy person to achieve some happiness, but hard for that person to find personal satisfaction, and self-worth. True joy requires good and bad experiences, to create the contrast.
The problem is that when things are not good, they become worse, because you become reactionary, like an animal in fight or flight, you are “at effect” of your emotions, and your surrounding, and your past “Hot Buttons”; and you are no longer in control. These are times when you make mistakes. Every time you make a mistake, suffer a blow, a loss; it damages your self-esteem, and your boldness, and you age, and become weaker, and these experiences are added to your memories, subconsciously. These accidentally added experiences affect your future actions, and your results.
The real solution to all of your problems
Know yourself. Most people look in the mirror and see something completely different from what is there. For once, have the courage to see yourself for what you really are. If you do not know yourself, you cannot plan to make changes that will benefit you. You are stuck with you, you are your best friend, your worst enemy, so take inventory, honestly, so that you know what you are working with. It helped me a great deal to write it all down.
Forgive yourself. In step 1 above, you are going to confront some imperfections, because none of us are perfect. I know, at first it is a huge blow to your ego! But do it anyway, your ego is not helping you. It disconnects you from reality, makes you sad when you are confronted with the truth, punishes you for not meeting unrealistic expectations, and hurts you. You are you, not the person that you are trying to be, for whatever reasons. Five minutes after you feel this pain, you will relax, feel relief, and find a new compassion for the person that you really are, and the rest of us, for, like you, we are not perfect, and there are reasons for our mistakes also, which have nothing to do with you. Welcome to the human race. Relax, it gets better.
Be thankful for the miracles in your life. Considering all your flaws, and everything that you know that has hurt you and worked against you, your life itself, and everything good that has happened, is amazing. In fact, when you consider your chances of growing from a random sperm and egg into that amazingly complicated human that you are, every life is a miracle. Every single time that you did not die is a miracle. Every single time that somebody took the time to get your attention, to teach you, to encourage you, to love you, think of them now. Those are your real life angels, they are your proof of a hidden order to the universe, and that you are not alone. When you die, or are dying, these are the experiences and accomplishments that matter, everything else in this world is meaningless, just proverbial dust. Nothing else will bring you happiness or joy or love. The harder the bad times, the more intense your joy becomes in good times, like stored up happiness. As you begin to realize the perfection of how things are setup, and how it all makes perfect sense, the beautiful music beneath the noise becomes audible, as Herman Hess would say; and, if you have not already, I suggest that you read his books, and all of the classics that are no longer required reading, but are part of a true, classical, empowering education. When you listen to the beautiful music, all the noise in the background fades from importance, and you experience true joy.
Take control. Now that you have given up your fake ego, confronted your own weakness and imperfection, and admitted your faults, and your smallness, now you are living in reality. Now that you know that you are not alone, and that you do not need to be alone of you do not want to be, and that you have never been alone, and that you have been nurtured and helped and protected along the way always; now you have the confidence to plan out what you will do with this knowledge. With this release, let yourself go with this joy, and be empowered beyond anything you ever imagined for yourself, for no mater how hard this is for you, others had to overcome more, and they did, in less time, without hesitation, and accomplished amazing things. If they can, so can you. Anything is possible if you believe it to be so. What you think, what you believe, you become, if you can believe it to be so, and you can. It is up to you to focus on the good, to program your own hard drive, if you will.
Have respect for others who have gone on this journey. Without appreciation for the beauty of others, you will never realize that beauty within yourself. When you love, you become filled with love. When you hate, you became filled with hate. Become filled with love, what some would call Agape love, love that wishes nothing in return, love that is it’s own reward. You are made to love, and to be loved. Love is written right into your DNA. If you let it, love will take over everything that you are.
Focus on the good. You choose what to think, what to believe, and what direction to go in. When you focus on good and positive things, you create more good and positive experiences. As easy as this is, so many people do so poorly here, reacting rather than deciding. All you need to do to turn this around is to be still, and to decide.
Be Reborn with Spirit. Now that you are enlightened, and forgiven, start over. Knowing what you now know about yourself and the rest of us, and by accepting it as true, you can be renewed, and carry on, for the person who you once were was but a mere shadow of who you can now be! It is not about organized religion, every example of which in the Bible is bad, it is about history, and you, and who you are now, and who you were then. Think about what has been said here, and be enlightened.
The answer is no, if you think that I am selling you “Religion”, for religions are created for men, and are not necessarily from GOD.
But I AM trying to change your perspective, and your beliefs, because if I can do that, if YOU can do that, you can change your life for the better, and become so much more than you are.
I am attempting to give you enlightenment, to walk is HIS footsteps, to give you what I have; and that can only come from God.
Focus not on what was said about HIM, the Jewish carpenter.
Instead, study what he did, and said, and learn why, re-program your mind, and you will finally understand why so many of us desire to be more like HIM.
If it is hard for you to believe what is written, consider that we can do most of these things ourselves today, because we too are children of God.
